Now that 2014 is over—and we've all decided that year's very best films—it's time to look ahead to 2015. Here are the 20 scheduled films we're most excited about.
Ant-Man (July 17)
Marvel is on such a roll right now that it's easy to ignore some of the warning signs here—director Edgar Wright, the only reason Marvel was making this movie in the first place,
leaving the project right before filming began foremost among them—in the wake of Guardians of the Galaxy, which opened up a whole new world of goofy sidebar comic-book B-movie possibilities to come. Paul Rudd is an inspired choice to play the title character, but the cast around him looks even more fun: Michael Douglas, Corey Stoll, Judy Greer, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Pena, and John Sl…
Hockey players can’t stop doing weird things with their mouths, and P.K. Subban might be the latest victim. At the end of the second period in an eventual 2-1 win for his Predators over the Golden Knights on Wednesday, the Nashville defender very visibly claimed that he was bitten on the finger while grabbing hold of Vegas’s Pierre-Edouard Bellemare in the crease. Video, unfortunately, wasn’t quite conclusive: Here’s probably the best angle of the bunch. There’s definitely an opportunity for teeth-on-digit action, if that’s what Bellemare desired: Bellemare wasn’t penalized at all for what may or may not have gone down, but Subban got four minutes for roughing and unsportsmanlike conduct, while Knights enforcer Ryan Reaves got two for trying to go after Subban at the …
The National Football League, as everyone knows, is a not-for-profit charity, the chief purpose of which is to promote the growth of the sport of football. Sure, it rakes in hundreds of millions of tax-exempt dollars annually, and pays its executives tens of millions, but why not? Who can quibble with its sterling track record of football promotion? Football is safer than it's ever been, and we've got Goodell to thank for that. He surely earned at least half of his salary just by thinking up new ways to penalize thuggish players for illegal hits to the head while allowing us to enjoy clean, healthy helmet-to-helmet smashes, which are still awesome. When not making sure we can watch the game with a clear conscience, Goodell's NFL is writing big checks to other charities…
The perfect contract: You rarely get that in sports. Of course, we may revisit this down the line and think otherwise, but for now, for this moment in time, Julius Randle’s extension with the New York Knicks is perfect for business. In 2020-21, while leading the Knicks to a No. 4 seed, widely outperforming the public’s preseason expectations, Randle averaged 24.1 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 6.0 assists per game on 46 / 41 / 81 shooting splits from the field, three-point range, and the free-throw line. Following his first All-Star campaign and 2021 Most Improved Player honor, the bully-ball four appeared in his first playoff series, where he was memorably lackluster, posting 18.0 points, 11.6 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game, but only shooting 30 percent from the field and 33 perc…
data-mm-id=”_lylof8xcu”>The Detroit Lions will be among the NFL teams sending a representative to Colin Kaepernick's Saturday workout. With Matthew Stafford likely sidelined for an extended period and playoff elimination hiding behind only one more loss, there's little reason or urgency to bring in the polarizing free agent. But teams are wont to do their due diligence. The Detroit Free Press' Dave Birkett — like any other human being who dares mention Kaepernick's name in an online post — was beset with a deluge of emails for simply reporting this news. More than one person, it appears, wasted no time issuing an ultimatum to Birkett, who I guess was supposed to relay this to Bob Quinn and other Lions brass — that signing Kaepernick would be the last straw for t…
data-mm-id=”_1c6ky9fse”>Ron Roenicke will be the interim manager of the Boston Red Sox. The team announced his promotion on Tuesday and by doing it missed a huge opportunity. Jason Varitek would have been the perfect choice and could have been the team's chance to get a public relations win after trading away Mookie Betts. Congrats to Interim Manager Ron Roenicke! pic.twitter.com/W8I89GRDdw— Red Sox (@RedSox) February 11, 2020Roenicke was the bench coach for the Red Sox under Alex Cora from 2018 through last season. He helped Boston win the 2018 World Series and has been a major league coach in some form for most of the last 20 years. He spent five years as the manager of the Milwaukee Brewers from 2011 through the beginning of the 2015 season and posted a 342-331 record (.508).…
data-mm-id=”_tj3eufqgz”>Since the Packers traded up to select Jordan Love in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, there have been a bevy of hot takes, the steamiest of which include Aaron Rodgers demanding a trade from Green Bay. The logic is rooted in the Packers' decision to pick his heir apparent instead of getting someone who could help him — like a second wide receiver opposite Davante Adams — and Rodgers' assumed disappointment over that decision. There's only one issue with this Rodgers-trade logic: It's completely illogical. As dissected yesterday when Max Kellerman said Carson Wentz should demand a trade from the Eagles because they picked Jalen Hurts in the second round, there are some quarterbacks who have untradeable contracts because of the dead cap…
data-mm-id=”_b8rmeuulr”>Boban Marjanović was a big part of the Dallas Mavericks' Game 2 win over the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday night, putting up 13 points and nine rebounds. He was rewarded with an interview after the game with the Inside The NBA guys, and was quite excited because it was his first time doing so. Boban is a wonderful personality and a great interview, so I'd recommend watching it all. I would, however, like to call attention to one particular part of the interview at the 3:50 mark of the above video. The crew brought up Boban's cameo in John Wick 3, where he plays a very large fellow assassin named Ernest. He attempts to kill John Wick, played by Keanu Reeves, in the New York Public Library. It's a super-awesome fight scene (if a bit violen…
data-mm-id=”_5rszero93″>The New York Jets will not be drafting Trevor Lawrence. No, the Clemson quarterback, in all likelihood, will wind up being selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars during the 2021 NFL Draft. With a generational talent at quarterback set to be available, the Jets played themselves out of a position to pick him by winning two meaningless games over the last two weeks. What could be more Jets-y than that?New York beat the Los Angeles Rams 23-20 in Week 15 and followed that up by topping the Cleveland Browns 23-16 in Week 16. The franchise that screws everything up couldn't even tank properly. Adam Gase's team is now 2-13, while the Jaguars are 1-14, and Jacksonville has clinched the top pick no matter what happens in Week 17. This all occurred solely because …
data-mm-id=”_jmnbvrr82″>The Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals played a little series over in London — which arguably has better pizza than anything you'd find in the rival cities — over the weekend and Major League Baseball made a huge deal about it. FOX got the Saturday game and introduced Derek Jeter to make all of those talking box deliveries worthwhile. ESPN had yesterday's contest and upped the ante by presenting one of the coolest camera angles and extended shots you'll ever see while parking in front of your television watching sports. While the Cardinals took the field for the top of the first, all eyes were on standout third baseman Nolan Arenado as he ran out to his position. He didn't do anything crazy like an Ozzie Smith flip on his way,…
